The lack of saplings or young Ent’s also showcases the inevitable if the Ent’s do not act now, there is no one to carry on their legacies or stories if there are no new Ent’s. This war could mean a few different things for the Ent’s, first it could represent the birth of a new age where Ent’s now fight alongside Men, Elves, and dwarves to keep Middle Earth safe from darkness, but it could also be the end of Ent’s themselves. They have become dormant and have lost their connection to the past, the few that remain travel less, search for the Entwives less, which is making them fall into silence. For a long time, they have been separated from their other halves, and in this separation many have disappeared or have become treelike, losing their Ent abilities. They have tales, songs, and a language all to their own. The back story to Treebeard and the Entwives, was an interesting one, they themselves have a role in middle earth, just like the Elves, Men, and Dwarves. There is no alternative at this point other than war against Saruman, and to attempt to stop the destruction of their race. Merry and Pippin have brought news to the Ent’s of the darkness that has arisen and the destruction that is coming. The Ent’s are in a way like the dwarves they steer clear of the fight of middle earth, unless that fight equals to their own destruction. Treebeard knows that this could be the final stand for the Ent’s and the end of their race. Days pass and the Ent’s have made the decision, it is war against Saruman and Isengard. Merry and Pippin do not understand the language of the Ent’s and Treebeard sends them off with Breglad while they deliberate. Once they reach the Entmoot Treebeard along with several other Ent’s collectively talk and decide what to do about Saruman’s treachery against the trees. Along the walk to Entmoot Treebeard talks of the Ent’s and the Entwives, and how they became separated and what has happened to the trees. As Merry and Pippin explain the nature of their quest and their reason for being in Fangorn, Treebeard calls forth a council of Ent’s to make a decision about Saruman and Isengard. Treebeard is unaware of Hobbits as they were not part of the original children born to Middle Earth. Treebeard speaks of the old tales and they first born, and how the elves taught Ent’s to speak. As they walk into Fangorn they encounter an Ent, and not only an Ent but Treebeard. The only hope for these two Hobbits is to try and find the rest of the company, where they are is still unknown since their capture by the Orc’s. Since they were basically tree-ish Ents, they could have killed the Orcs any way the Ents did - with brute strength.Merry and Pippin have escaped into Fangorn and the Orc’s have been slain. If you would learn that, you should come with me to Isengard ' answered Gandalf. 'And what may be the answer to your riddle?' said Théoden. Better than myĭesign, and better even than my hope the event has proved.' It is a thing beyond the counsel of the wise. Between the Dike and the eaves of that nameless wood only two open furlongs lay.

Great trees, bare and silent, stood, rank on rank, with tangled bough and hoary head their twisted roots were buried in the long green grass.

Where before the green dale had lain, its grassy slopes lapping theĮver-mounting hills, there now a forest loomed.

Gandalf backs up this supposition, implying that it was indeed the Ents that sent them: Treebeard says – but they have become queer and wild. They still have voices, and can speak with the Ents – that is why they are called Huorns, Suddenly you find that you are in the middle of a wood with great groping trees all around you. Stand still looking at the weather, maybe, or listening to the rustling of the wind, and then They can move very quickly, if they are angry. 'There is a great power in them, and they seem able to wrap themselves in shadow: it isĭifficult to see them moving. Trees but deep in the darkest dales there are hundreds and hundreds of them, I believe. They stand here and there in the wood or under its eaves, silent, watching endlessly over the Treebeard won't say muchĪbout them, but I think they are Ents that have become almost like trees, at least to look at. 'It was the Huorns, or so the Ents call them in "short language". They wereįar down the valley in the morning or any rate there was a shadow there that one couldn't see Move south, as soon as the gates were shut again. 'But, though I could not see what was happening in the dark, I believe that Huorns began to He suggested that they headed off to deal with the Orcs The trees in question were Huorns, though exactly what Hourns are isn't conclusively proven - we were only given Merry's speculation.
